Buffalo, NY was struggling to keep pace with economic changes in the 1960’s that saw many families fleeing to the suburbs. Like many northeastern cities, the city’s fortunes were changing dramatically during the same time that civil rights movements fought for equal opportunities among families and neighborhoods that were on the receiving end of economic changes.

The first half of “People I Don’t Know” chronicles the condition of Main Street around 1967. Numerous shops could still be seen alongside a daily stream of visitors seeing what local merchants had to offer. These relative prosperity spoke to Buffalo’s glory days that would fade as time marched on.

The second half visits Main Street, as well as portions of the East Side from 2013 and 2014. Much of the wealth and prosperity that are beacons of the city’s rich history are gone. But within the abandoned buildings, aging homes, and scarce businesses lie a community that has endured decades of change, and like nature itself, survives to share a new set of lessons as Buffalo prepares to shape itself for the 21st Century.
